Final touches, such as light in the eyes, on the hair, and off jewelry, make a big difference, but there are many steps before this one.
Sharing the Fine Art Experience through books, documentaries, school and museum visits has nurtured our Artist / Muse relationship.
Underpainting is one method I use to master complex proportions and color schemes
Strengthening colors, I saw that most of the work for this painting was going to come at the end.
Emulating Vermeer's "liquid light", this last step took an entire day. The floor is a thin red glaze over the existing dry shadow.
The most difficult step here was the figure...
To achieve a dynamic, spontaneous feeling I completely finished the background before starting the figure.
Welcome to photographs and remarks from
Inspiration is the most important element of Art, but inspiration needs to be reinforced with talent and research. An Artist will glimpse a beautiful moment but, looking back to see it again, will find it gone. The Studio is where an Artist attempts to recreate those lost moments, and a Sketchbook is an excellent way to share them with a model or muse.
All Artists love their Studios because that is where all their talent, training and research are realized.
Ancient civilizations believed a Muse crept from behind and whispered in the ear of an Artist as he was working. Unlike the Model who 'poses', a Muse seeks to inspire - to encourage the Artist to combine reality with the best of his experience, talent and imagination.
Our Studios
Rushing waters, falling leaves, or gusting winds will never be still...
We enrich our own experiences by studying art, painting, photography, fitness and fashion publications to create a balance of ancient skill and modern beauty in our work.
When working indoors we surround ourselves with our earlier work and all genres of music.
We have always enjoyed each other's company...
...and love to share nice hot cups of coffee...
...and we have always loved
long walks outdoors...
...and sometimes we make our own...
Sometimes we treat ourselves to a pack of
brand new brushes...
...whittling wooden dowels for handles...
...cutting broken radio antennas for ferrules...
...then shaping the bristles with scissors.
...using a romantic source for bristles...
Blessed silence can produce deep effects
...sometimes the most important Studio is in the mind of the Artist.
...strong glue to hold everything together...
...where we are surrounded by the work of the Master Artist !
Travelling with some or all of our 5 children
Sometimes a spectacular view from our rooms on the 40th floor...

...sometimes quiet moments on sandy beaches...
...walking the boardwalks,...
...swimming in the mysterious sea or crystal clear pools...
...falling asleep to the roaring ocean waves...
...All these become part of our memories and my sketchbook...
...so complex that it took an entire day.
provides many beautiful, spontaneous moments.
...to be analyzed, recreated,  and adjusted...
...in our studios !
